Description

Visible in the center of the frame are 2 examples from Arp's Peculiar Galaxy catalog.

ARP299 is the large interacting trio(?) in the center of the frame. This includes NGC3690 which is vaguely described as the whole area and is even incorrectly centered on the plate solve here. The Arp catalog separates ARP299(a,b,c) as the constituents of this galactic merger. There is a bit of confusion around IC694, which is identified as the galactic structure above and to the left (in my frame) which sits just outside the main grouping. It is not clear if this is truly a member of the Arp collection or not, though most literature will claim it is not.

ARP296 is the pair of interacting galaxies below this main grouping. Its morphology is listed as a "double galaxy with long filaments". The image would tend to agree with a long but extraordinarily faint tidal tail reaching from the barred spiral on the left down through the other. Surrounding this streamer are visible galaxies I could pick out with magnitudes in the 20-21 range. So, that gives an idea of just how faint these filaments are.

I stretched this image quite deeply and am picking up a few more suspected tidal "tails". One extending away from ARP299 out to the left and and a large area at about the 1 o'clock (again when viewed in my image orientation above). I have no honest idea if these are reality or some artifact.

The area reminds me of Stephan's Quintet, but much less frequently imaged.

Looking around the frame, it is quite littered with other dim fuzzies! I used PixInsight's Mure Denoise script for initial noise reduction and it tends to leave a residual chunky-ness to the noise character, at least when I use it with this camera. I may go back and redo Luminance with my typical process. But, if you don't pixel peep too much...
